dual-route model of reading

The fundamental property of dual-route models of reading is the idea that skilled readers have at their disposal two different procedures for converting print to speech. These two routes are, roughly speaking, a diction- ary look-up procedure and a letter-to-sound conversion rule procedure.

This theory suggests that two separate mental mechanisms, or cognitive routes, are involved in reading aloud, with output of both mechanisms contributing to the pronunciation of a written stimulus.
